Heirs of Nazi victim seeking stolen art

BERLIN, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Carl-Friedrich Wentzel, a descendant of a Nazi victim, is heading an international fight for the return of family artworks seized during World War II.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that Wentzel, whose grandfather was killed for his role in an assassination attempt of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, is at the forefront of an effort to regain stolen art from German authorities.

"My grandfather was murdered by the Nazis, his family imprisoned and his art treasures stolen," the 56-year-old said. "I find it unbelievable that more than 60 years after these crimes were committed, I am unable to get the family's paintings back. The authorities are stonewalling."

Key among those holding back Wentzel's claims are officials at Germany's Mortizburg Art Museum, where many of his grandfather's artworks are said to be located.

Wentzel told the newspaper that if his attempts to regain the items -- he's seen an inventory -- do not move forward, he would then begin legal action against their German owners.
