LOS ANGELES, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Clint Eastwood's World War II films and O.J. Simpson's scrubbed book and TV deal are among the American Film Institute's "most significant" moments of 2006.
The AFI this week named its "Moments of Significance" awards, marking eight events that "had an impact on the world of the moving image."
Eastwood's acclaimed war movies, "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima," were hailed as "creating one of the great motion picture experiences" by presenting the bloody Pacific battle from both sides.
The AFI said in a news release that the cancellation by News Corps. of Simpson's book and TV special promoting it showed that television had a conscience. Simpson had been pushing a book purporting to describe how he would have killed his ex-wife and her friend.
Other honored events included the death of director Robert Altman; the rise of YouTube on the Internet; the documentary "An Inconvenient Truth"; the end of production of VHS video; the Internet sensation caused by comedian Stephen Colbert's appearance at the White House correspondents' dinner; and the TV networks' challenge to FCC rules on "indecent" language.
