Snipes pleads innocent to tax charges

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Movie star Wesley Snipes was freed on $1 million bond after pleading innocent Friday in a Florida courtroom to federal tax charges.

Snipes was indicted in October on charges he tried to collect more than $11 million in allegedly fraudulent tax refunds, and quit filing altogether in 1998.

Snipes was given permission to travel to Africa to complete filming of a new movie, but was ordered to be back in the United States by Jan. 10 and then surrender his passport.

The Los Angeles Times said Snipes told reporters outside the federal courthouse that the delay between being charged in October and surrendering Friday was due to his being out of the country and not because he was "on the lam."
