Madonna named highest paid female singer

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- The new "Guinness Book of Records" names U.S. pop star Madonna as the highest paid female singer in the world, People magazine said.

The title had previously been held by Britney Spears since 2001, after making slightly more than $38 million in 2000.

Madonna reportedly earned $50 million in 2004.

People reported Janet Jackson also replaced Spears in Web rankings for the world's most searched-for female and most searched-for news item. Brad Pitt was the most searched-for male.

Also cited in the 2007 edition of the book are Nicole Kidman, Oprah Winfrey, "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.
