Report: Universal gets Nixon play rights

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Universal Pictures has won the rights to the hot new play "Frost/Nixon," which is based on David Frost's post-Watergate interviews with Richard Nixon.

Daily Variety said Universal won over Dreamworks and a gaggle of other top producers for the right to adapt Peter Morgan's play into a motion picture that Ron Howard will direct.

The play has earned rave reviews in London and stars Frank Langella as Nixon and Martin Sheen as Frost, the British interviewer who got the former president on the air in 1977, just a few years after his resignation in the wake of the Watergate scandal.

Variety said Morgan would be involved in the adaptation, which will be jointly produced by Imagine Entertainment and Working Title.
