Academics add depth to 'Lebowski' forum

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- An academic symposium will highlight next week's Lebowski Fest, an annual convention in Louisville, Ky., dedicated to the cult film "The Big Lebowski."

The 1998 movie is seen by its deeper fans as a classic mix of slapstick and literariness, with the nuances and dimensions that make for meaty discussions.

"We have convened a program of academics and non-academics that departs from the usual format of scholarly conferences," English Professor Alan Jaffe told the Louisville (Ky.) Courier Saturday. "Papers are shorter, approaches more varied, and there's a lot more time for the greasy lane food and wild-eyed discussion we love."

"The Big Lebowski" stars Jeff Bridges and John Goodman in an offbeat crime story centered around bowling.
