John Mayer gets soulful on new album

WANTAUGH, N.Y., Sept. 12 (UPI) -- John Mayer's fifth album finds the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter taking yet another different musical direction.

The new "Continuum" is laden with soul and R&B influences, though Mayer considers it "a pop album with certain ingredients of soul music." But it's decidedly different than its predecessors, which Mayer claims is by design.

"It's no surprise to me that I was gonna play different music each time out," said Mayer, whose won his Grammy for the mellow hits "Your Body is a Wonderland" and "Daughters."

"I'm here by way of my entire life. If it's music, it's music. And it's one thing -- it's not eight different things. It's MY music. That's the category."

Mayer is on tour with Sheryl Crow and plans to launch his own tour this fall.
