Smith to be 'Ebert & Roeper' critic

CHICAGO, July 27 (UPI) -- Director Kevin Smith will be a guest movie critic on the U.S. TV series "Ebert & Roeper," taking the place of host Roger Ebert who is recovering from surgery.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the "Dogma" director will record his Aug. 12 guest spot alongside host Richard Roeper next week.

"Looks like I'll be sitting in for Roger Ebert next week, as a guest critic on 'Ebert and Roeper.' Kind of a cool honor, I feel." Smith said on his newsaskew.com blog.

The replacement duty came about after the length of Ebert's recovery period following his surgery to remove a cancerous growth began to outnumber the series' already recorded shows.

The new position begged the question whether Smith would be able to play TV critic to his own newest cinematic endeavor, "Clerks 2," which opened last Friday.

"We'll be checking out 'Miami Vice,' 'Ant Bully,' 'Talladega Nights,' 'Barnyard' and maybe (fingers crossed) 'World Trade Center.'" Smith wrote on his blog.
