TISBURY, Mass., July 16 (UPI) -- Defying doctors' expectations, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Art Buchwald is living in Martha's Vineyard off Massachusetts and loving every moment of it.
Last year the 80-year-old political columnist ignored the advice of doctors, who told him that without dialysis for his failing kidneys he would not live much longer, and after months of embracing death he now is enjoying life, the Boston Globe said.
"The whole point is I didn't expect to be here," Buchwald said of the experience. "My plan was to leave the earth. And then I thought, to hell with it, I'll go to the Vineyard."
While checked into a Washington hospice for treatment, Buchwald had a number of eulogies written by influential friends such as Walter Cronkite and Mike Wallace, all of which will now by printed in his new book "Too Soon to Say Goodbye."
The New York-born journalist rose to fame in the 1960s with his unflinching political commentary and has been published in over 550 newspapers in his life, the Globe reported.
