Emmy nominations defy expectations

LOS ANGELES, July 7 (UPI) -- This year's Emmy nominations overlooked many obvious choices, some Hollywood observers said.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Los Angeles changed the voting system for the Emmys this year, but the nominations -- announced Thursday -- had some wondering about the outcome.

Showtime entertainment president Bob Greenblatt told Daily Variety he was glad his network had 19 nominations -- its most ever -- but he was perplexed by the nominations overall.

"The nomination process seems to have taken another step in the wrong direction," he said.

Greenblatt said he was "baffled" by the failure of such shows as as "Battlestar Galactica" and "Rescue Me" -- and of actors such as "Weeds" star Mary-Louise Parker.

"I can't complain because we're a relatively small network, and most of our shows are represented. But I don't know how you look at (Parker's) performance against all the others and it doesn't at least make the top five."

The new system had selected panels consider entries, with the intention of giving a better chance at nomination to shows that were not ratings hits.
