NAACP says TV nets ignoring black comedies

LOS ANGELES, June 13 (UPI) -- The NAACP says a lack of African American stars in new U.S. TV comedies indicates the industry is letting up on its diversification efforts.

"The lack of African American leads in sitcoms is unconscionable," NAACP President Bruce S. Gordon said.

Gordon said he planned to meet with network TV executives to discuss why none of the new sitcoms planned for the 2006/2007 season on ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX have black stars, TVWeek.com reported Tuesday.

"This is historically where many African American actors, directors, writers and show runners have honed their artistic skills and found meaningful employment," Gordon said in a statement released Monday.

Fox TV's now-canceled "The Bernie Mac Show" was the last network comedy featuring blacks in key roles, the NAACP said.
