Blake to pay $30 million for wife's death

BURBANK, Calif., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A Burbank, Calif., jury Friday found Robert Blake liable in the 2001 shooting death of his wife and ordered him to pay $30 million to her children.

After the "Baretta" star was acquitted of murder in criminal court, Bonny Lee Bakley's four children sued him for wrongful death in civil court, which requires a lower burden of proof.

After hearing from more than 40 witnesses including Blake and deliberating eight days, the Los Angeles County Superior Court jury decided Blake was more likely than not responsible for Bakley's shooting death, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The jury, however, rejected the children's contention that handyman Earl S. Caldwell conspired with Blake to have Bakley killed.
