Art Garfunkel arrested on pot charge

WOODSTOCK, N.Y., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Singer Art Garfunkel was busted on a pot charge outside of Woodstock, N.Y, his second marijuana violation in two years.

Garfunkel was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana after he was pulled over by state police Sunday for running a stop sign, the Kingston, N.Y. Daily Freeman reported Tuesday.

The arresting trooper "detected a strong odor of marijuana eminating from the vehicle" and a search revealed a joint in the singer's ashtray, the police report said.

Garfunkel, 60, was not charged with driving while impaired because there was no proof he was actually smoking pot, police said.

The New York resident was ordered to appear in court in Woodstock, N.Y., Sept. 22.

The arrest was not far from where Garfunkel was busted in January 2004, the newspaper said. Garfunkel pleaded guilty to that possession charge and paid a $100 fine and a $100 state surcharge.
