KHARTOUM, Sudan, July 22 (UPI) -- The Sudanese government has apologized for mistreating NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell after she asked the president a tough question.
Sudan President Omar el-Bashir and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice were posing for photographers Thursday when Mitchell asked el-Bashir about his promise to stop the violence in Darfur, where as many as 300,000 people have been killed. She was dragged from the room by Sudanese security.
"Two goons from his security forces inside the presidential palace dragged me from behind, started dragging me out of the room," Mitchell told NBC's "Today" Thursday. "I kept asking the question, they kept dragging me, pulling my arm, unplugging my microphone."
Rice demanded and received an apology from Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail Thursday, the Guardian reported.
"It makes me very angry to be sitting there with their president and have this happen," Rice said. "They have no right to push and shove."
