Scott Weiland cleared of drug charges

PASADENA, Calif., July 13 (UPI) -- Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland successfully went through rehab, so a California judge dismissed a drug possession case against him.

Weiland, 37, was sentenced to one year in prison in 1999 for violating probation in an earlier drug case. His previous band, Stone Temple Pilots, broke up as he fought a decade-long battle against heroin addiction, RollingStone.com reported Wednesday.

The latest charge stemmed from a May 2003 incident in which heroin and cocaine were found in a car Weiland was riding in, Rolling Stone said.

Arrested for driving under the influence two months after being sentenced to probation for possession charge, Weiland was ordered into residential rehab with day passes so he could finish recording Velvet Revolver's debut album, "Contraband," which has since racked up platinum sales.

The judge in Pasadena cited Weiland's successful rehab stint in dropping the remaining charges Tuesday.
