Natalie Portman gives up hair for new role

CANNES, France, May 16 (UPI) -- "Star Wars" star Natalie Portman drew gasps at the Cannes Film Festival when she showed up with no hair on her head.

The 23-year-old explained before the world premiere of "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" she shaved her head for her role as a freedom fighter "V for Vendetta," the Daily Mail reported Monday.

The Oscar nominated actress has played Padme, Queen of Naboo, in the last three "Star Wars" films.

"Revenge of the Sith" is the prequel to the original 1977 Star Wars movie and brings the saga full circle by revealing how young Jedi Anakin Skywalker turns to the Dark Side and becomes Darth Vader.
