'Sweet Home Chicago' heirs battle

JACKSON, Miss., March 29 (UPI) -- Relatives claim the only known photos of "Sweet Home Chicago" author Robert Johnson are family mementos and not part of the legendary bluesman's estate.

The Mississippi Supreme Court in December ordered a trial be held on claims by Johnson's nephew, Robert Harris of Chicago, and half-sister, Annye Anderson of Churchton, Md., the Wall Street Journal and Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The two sued the Sony Corp.'s music division, blues historian Stephen La Vere and former truck driver Claud Johnson, who was named sole heir of the $1.3 million estate in 1998.

However, the ruling left in question who owns two pictures of Johnson--the only known images of the musician who died in 1938. One picture graced a 1990 album released by CBS Records' Columbia, which Sony acquired.

An attorney said picture rights could be worth seven figures.

"Sweet Home Chicago" is among 29 songs Johnson recorded in 1936 and 1937.
