D.A. has harsh words for Blake trial jury

LOS ANGELES, March 25 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles district attorney told a reporters' group that the jury in the trial of actor Robert Blake was "incredibly stupid."

The Los Angeles Times reports that D.A. Steve Cooley addressed a meeting of the Society of Professional Journalists.

"Quite frankly, based on my review of the evidence, he is as guilty as sin. He is a miserable human being," Cooley said.

Blake was acquitted of the murder of his wife. Jurors spent nine days in deliberations but in interviews afterwards said that only two of their number were ever convinced of Blake's guilt.

Blake's lawyer told the Times that Cooley is "small-minded," and a juror described his comments as "sour grapes."

Cooley told the reporters that trying celebrities is tough in Los Angeles because area residents think that they know them. He said that in the upcoming trial of music producer Phil Spector, charged with killing an actress at his home, prosecutors will show the jury "the real Phil Spector."
