LONDON, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Elton John apologized for publicly insulting Madonna earlier this month when the British entertainer claimed the Material Girl lip-synched at her concerts.
John said the comments, made at London's Q Awards, came "in the heat of the moment" and after "a very drunken lunch," Sky News reported Friday.
"I don't want to escalate it because I like Madonna. It was something that was said in the heat of the moment, and probably should not have been said. Would I apologize to her if I saw her? Yeah, because I don't want to hurt any artist's feelings," John said.
The insults were made when John presented the award for best live act, a category in which Madonna was nominated.
"Since when has lip-synching been live? Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay 75 pounds ($130) to see them should be shot," the singer said, referring to Madonna.
Madonna, through a spokeswoman, denied John's allegations.
"She sang every note of her Re-invention tour live and is not ashamed that she was well-paid for her hard work," said Liz Rosenberg.
