Boxing reality show producer sues Fox

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Hollywood producer Mark Burnett, creator of NBC's boxing show, "The Contender," has sued Fox to knock out Fox's competing boxing series.

DreamWorks TV and Burnett, partners in "The Contender," filed a suit seeking a restraining order against the show's broadcast in Santa Monica, Calif., Superior Court Tuesday against Fox Broadcasting and Endemol USA and Lock & Key productions, producers of "The Next Great Champ," E! Online reported Wednesday.

NBC was not involved in the suit.

Burnett sought the order based on a report by the former chairman of California's State Athletic Commission who said the Fox series violated the state's "business and professions code."

The commission plans to review the allegations Sept. 3.

In the meantime, a Santa Monica judge, who heard from both parties Tuesday, said she would rule Wednesday on a motion for a restraining order.

Fox lost "Contender," with Sylvester Stallone, George Foreman and Sugar Ray Leonard, earlier this year in a bidding war with NBC. Soon after, Fox started work on its own boxing series hosted by Oscar De La Hoya.
