Zeta-Jones stalker competent to face trial

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles court-appointed psychiatrist found Catherine Zeta-Jones's accused stalker competent to stand trial for allegedly terrorizing the actress.

Dr. Kal Sharma, in his mental evaluation, found Dawnette Knight sane and capable of aiding her own defense, said Knight's attorney, Richard Herman, E! Online reported Tuesday.

The preliminary hearing, in which Zeta-Jones and actor husband Michael Douglas testified to Knight's alleged threats, was halted when Herman told the judge his client may not be mentally fit to stand trial, primarily due to Knight's attempted suicide attempt while imprisoned.

With the mental evaluation completed, the hearing has been scheduled to resume Sept. 9, at which time Knight must return to court.

If the judge determines there is enough evidence to try the case, Knight, 33, could face trial on 24 counts of stalking.
