John Scott Martin ready to be Dalek again

LONDON, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- At age 77, actor John Scott Martin says he's ready to reprise his role of Dalek in the 2005 "Doctor Who" British television series.

The BBC reported Tuesday that Martin, who played the doctor's arch villain from 1964 to 1980, will don the costume again, if asked.

"I really enjoyed doing it before and I would happily run around as a Dalek again," he told BBC News Online. "It could be difficult at times and I'm not as fit as I used to be, but I'm sure I could do it again."

The Dalek role required actors to squeeze into a wooden or metal costume and to glide on three caster wheels -- the costumes were hot so the actor was usually only dressed in underwear.

A BBC spokeswoman said "Doctor Who" producers had yet to decided whether the role would be fully automated or operated by actors in the forthcoming series.
