Burt Bacharach set for Mancini award

LOS ANGELES, July 7 (UPI) -- The Henry Mancini Institute announced Wednesday saxophonist Tom Scott will headline the 2004 Mancini Musicale in Los Angeles next month.

The institute will present composer Burt Bacharach with the fifth annual Hank Award -- named after the late composer Henry Mancini -- at UCLA's Royce Hall on Aug. 14. The award is presented to recognize distinguished service to American music.

With lyricist and collaborator Hal David, Bacharach has written such pop standards as "What the World Needs Now is Love," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?," "The Look of Love," "Walk on By" and "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself."

He has won three Academy Awards and five Grammys. In 1997, David and Bacharach received the Recording Academy's prestigious Trustees Award.

Proceeds from the Mancini Musicale will benefit the Henry Mancini Institute scholarship fund. The event will feature a performance by the Henry Mancini Orchestra, led by Emmy- and Grammy-winning composer-conductor Patrick Williams. Bacharach will also perform a medley of his songs.

Legendary record producer Phil Ramone -- a past recipient of the Hank Award -- will present the award to Bacharach.
