Larry Hagman rejects liver transplant

OJAI, Calif., June 18 (UPI) -- Actor Larry Hagman has told TV Guide Online he prefers death to a second liver transplant.

Hagman, best known as the star of TV's "Dallas," said he told his doctors not to put him on a transplant list after an infection struck his liver late last year. "Don't bother. I'm 72 years old. I don't want to deprive somebody of a new liver just because I'm greedy."

Hagman received a transplant in 1995 and became an advocate for organ recipients. He said he feels fine now in spite of tabloid stories reporting him near death.

The son of musical comedy star Mary Martin, Hagman has had a long career in television, where he starred in the sitcom, "I Dream of Jeannie," and the movies and did some directing. But it was his role as J.R. Ewing that made him an international star and gave him an indelible image as the dominating oilman.

A "Dallas" reunion show is scheduled to air in the fall.
