Tom Hanks heading West?

LOS ANGELES, June 16 (UPI) -- Tom Hanks is planning to produce and star in a Western, Daily Variety reported Wednesday.

The paper said Universal Pictures is in talks with "The Cider House Rules Director" Lasse Hallström to direct Hanks and Julianne Moore in "Boone's Lick," an adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel.

Moore will play a woman who takes her family from Missouri to a fort in Wyoming where her husband lives. Hanks will play her husband's brother, who guides the family on the journey and falls in love with his sister-in-law along the way.

The screenplay is by McMurtry and Diana Ossana. Ossana has written and produced three TV miniseries based on McMurtry's work -- "Johnson County War," "Dead Man's Walk" and "Streets of Laredo."

Variety said "Boone's Lick" is "in the vein of 'Lonesome Dove'" -- the 1999 miniseries based on the McMurtry book of the same name.
