Van Halen summer tour in the works

NEW YORK, March 23 (UPI) -- Rock band Van Halen, after a six year absence from the road, has announced a summer U.S. tour, but no one has confirmed who will front the band.

The band's Web site listed 11 cities, but no dates, as show stops, Billboard reported Tuesday.

Sammy Hagar is the front runner for the band's lead vocalist spot, though there has been no confirmation, the article said.

Hagar was Van Halen's lead singer for 11 years until 1996 after David Lee Roth left the band in 1985.

Roth briefly returned to Van Halen in 1996, but former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone sang lead on the band's last tour in 1998 and for the band's "Van Halen III" CD.

Cities listed for shows are Detroit; East Rutherford, N.J.; Greensboro, N.C.; Hershey, Pa.; Kansas City, Mo.; Las Vegas; Philadelphia; St. Louis; St. Paul, Minn.; Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; and Worcester, Mass.
