'Live Aid' concert to be released on DVD

LONDON, March 8 (UPI) -- "Live Aid," the 1985 rock concert that raised more than $70 million for famine relief in Africa, will be released on DVD for the first time.

Organizers of the event said they will auction the rights to release the DVD after pirated copies were found for sale on the Internet, the BBC reported Monday.

They are hoping to raise "a few million pounds" for the Band Aid Trust, which still exists to relieve poverty and hunger in Ethiopia and the surrounding area.

The 16-hour music marathon, which was spearheaded by Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof and featured dozens of the hottest acts of the day, took place in London and Philadelphia.

Although it aired on television, the concert has never come out on CD, video or DVD.

The DVD is expected to be released by Christmas.
