Luther Vandross to watch Grammys on TV

NEW YORK, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Singer Luther Vandross has recorded a message to his fans, which will be shown during Sunday night's Grammy telecast on CBS.

The wheelchair-bound Vandross, who will be honored in addition to his five nominations, was deemed by doctors as "too fragile" to make the trip from New York to Los Angeles for the ceremony, the Washington Post reported Saturday.

However, Vandross will be watching the broadcast from a rehabilitation center with his mother, Mary Ida Vandross, 80, by his side, the newspaper said.

Mary told the Post her 52-year-old son has made leaps and bounds since suffering a massive stroke last April, but he is still far from being able-bodied.

She said he is learning to walk, dress and feed himself again. And, she added, his mind is still strong.

"To see a strong man like my son reduced to where he was and to come up to where he is, you would marvel at him," she said.
