Kerry looks to storm the South

MANCHESTER, N.H., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Sen. John Kerry planned to sweep the South straight from his sweeping victory Tuesday in the New Hampshire primary.

Kerry, riding high from his come-from-behind victories in the Iowa caucuses and a double-digit triumph in the Granite State, planned to fly straight to St. Louis, Missouri, Wednesday in his drive to pick up its rich harvest of 74 delegates in the Feb. 3 primary.

The Kerry campaign also announced ambitious plans to drive hard in the other six states holding primaries or caucuses that day: South Carolina, Arizona, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Delaware and New Mexico.

Kerry has hopes of challenging and displacing retired Gen. Wesley Clark in Arizona where two recent polls have placed him in the lead. And he also hopes to reverse his previous weak showing in opinion polls in South Carolina by appealing to the 400,000 armed forces veterans in the state.
