Golden Globes tap best films, directors

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Familiar names and titles were nominated in the director, screenplay and original score categories when the Golden Globe nominations were announced Thursday.

The following directors were nominated for best in their field: Sofia Coppola ("Lost In Translation"), Clint Eastwood ("Mystic River"), Peter Jackson ("The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"), Anthony Minghella ("Cold Mountain") and Peter Weir ("Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World").

Best motion picture screenplay nominations went to Sofia Coppola for "Lost In Translation," Richard Curtis for "Love Actually," Brian Helgeland for "Mystic River," Anthony Minghella for "Cold Mountain" and Jim Sheridan, Naomi Sheridan and Kirsten Sheridan for "In America."

Best motion picture original score nominations were "Girl With A Pearl Earring" by Alexandre Desplat, "Big Fish" by Danny Elfman, "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" by Howard Shore, "Cold Mountain" by Gabriel Yared and "The Last Samurai" by Hans Zimmer.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will hand out the Golden Globe Awards Jan. 25.
