NEW YORK, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- The Dayton Contemporary Dance Company is presenting a five-performance series celebrating the 100th anniversary of flight.
"The Flight Project" programs, which will be performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music this week, include new dances by choreographers Bill T. Jones, Dwight Rohden, Bebe Miller, Doug Varone, and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar.
They were commissioned by the Dayton company to create works suggested by the words "inventing flight," but none depicted the Dayton natives Wilbur and Orville Wright themselves, choosing instead to present abstract ideas of flight.
"All five took really different approaches to the task," Kevin Ward, the company's artistic director, said Tuesday at the first "Flight Project."
"It caught the imagination of a lot of presenters, and we are being asked for it in a lot of new cities we have never toured before."
The flight centennial program marks the 35th anniversary of the Dayton company, which was founded by the late Jeraldyne Blunden to promote the work of black choreographers like herself and black dancers.
