Chong to serve 9 months for bong sales

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Comic Tommy Chong will be serving a jail sentence for selling bongs but Daily Variety says his upcoming picture with Cheech Marin isn't going up in smoke.

A Pittsburgh federal judge sentenced the 65-year-old Chong to nine months Thursday, fined him $20,000 and ordered him to forfeit $103,000 in proceeds from his Web site. Chong pleaded guilty in May to selling pot pipes over the Internet through his Nice Dreams Enterprises.

New Line had been planning to start shooting the new, still-to-be-scripted Cheech and Chong flick during Marin's hiatus from shooting his Fox Network series, "The Ortegas." Chong's daughter, Robbi, is producing the pic.

But with Cong expected to surrender to authorities in five weeks, that scheduled will slip.

Cheech and Chong made their first movie, "Up in Smoke," in 1978 and their last, "Cheech and Chong's The Corsican Brothers," in 1984. The duo developed their stoner comic routine during a 16-year partnership.
