lang, Cincotti headline Newport Jazz Fest

NEWPORT, R.I., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Singer k.d. lang and Ivy League crooner Peter Cincotti open the granddaddy of American jazz festivals -- the JVC Newport Jazz Festival -- Friday night.

"With next year marking the 50th anniversary of this extraordinary festival, we are excited to be offering a program with a diverse lineup of first rate talent. We've got something for everyone," said George Wein, producer since the festival's 1954 inception.

The Saturday lineup at Fort Adams State Park includes trumpeter Terence Blanchard, pianist Michel Camilo, saxophonist David Sanchez, George Benson and India.Arie.

Sunday's finale features the Newport debut of guitarist Pat Metheny; pianist Dave Brubeck, the event's most prolific performer; singer Cassandra Wilson and Eddie Palmieri.

Much attention will also be paid to the adventurous and innovative acts on the festival's smaller Mercedes-Benz Pavilion. They include singer Lizz Wright, Kendrick Oliver and the New Life Orchestra, the Bad Plus piano trio, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra and saxophonist Dewey Redman.
