Sofia, Ankara agree to gas interconnection

KAYSERI, Turkey, June 10 (UPI) -- Bulgaria and Turkey agreed to work on building a natural gas network interconnection between the two countries, the Bulgarian energy minister said from Turkey.

Bulgarian Energy Minister Traicho Traikov met in Kayseri, Turkey, with his Turkish counterpart Taner Yildiz during a signing ceremony for the Nabucco natural gas pipeline.

"The implementation schedule for the gas pipeline makes us reiterate the importance of a speedy construction of a gas grid interconnection that will allow us to achieve true diversification and access other sources of gas supplies," Traikov was quoted by the Sofia News Agency as saying.

A working group recommended building the interconnection without specific commitments for Nabucco.

Delegates from the five transit countries -- Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Turkey – met Wednesday in Turkey with Nabucco officials to sign project support agreements.

The PSA serves to confirm that the laws that apply to Nabucco are those of 2011 when the agreements were signed.

The project is intended to move non-Russian natural gas to Europe.
