BEIRUT, Lebanon, May 28 (UPI) -- The Lebanese government is threatening to cut the power supplies of politicians as of Tuesday if they don't settle unpaid bills.
Energy and Water Minister Jebran Bassil told reporters during a news conference, "Electricite du Liban staff have called all the politicians and influential figures who failed to pay their bills for many years and warned them that the company could cut off electricity," The Daily Star reported Friday.
Bassil noted that despite a first warning issued several months ago, only 23 percent of the delinquent politicians receiving the warning paid their bills to EDL.
Bassil continued: "These politicians and influential figures have all the financial means to pay their bills and they have no excuse not to do so. I will give the courts one month to verify these complaints but if the courts found out that they did not pay their bills then EDL will take action and if their complaints were legitimate then the company will not cut off power supply."
