Google releases energy plan

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Officials with U.S.-based Web search engine Google have released their own version of an energy plan for the country.

The San Jose Mercury News compared Eric Schmidt, Google's chief executive officer and chairman, to the likes of other U.S. business leaders with energy plans such as Al Gore and T. Boone Pickens.

Schmidt's plan consists of conservation, new sources of energy generation and plug-in cars. He also said Google is giving funding to start-up companies that fall in line with his plan.

The Google entrepreneur outlined his plan during a Sept. 8 speech at the Corporate EcoForum in San Francisco. He said the United States needs to get all its electricity from renewable sources within 20 years, and half of all cars that use gasoline need to be eliminated.

While it will cost a lot of money to make the switch, Schmidt said it also will create new jobs and generate savings.
