Nabucco unaffected by Georgia conflict

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Regional conflict in the Caucasus has no impact on plans for construction of the Nabucco gas pipeline from Turkey to Central Europe, officials said Thursday.

Reinhard Mitschek, managing director of the pipeline consortium, said the conflict in Georgia over South Ossetia province has no effect on plans to begin operating the Nabucco pipeline in 2013, the Trend Capital News Agency said.

Mitschek said his operational responsibilities do not include political or military issues, adding the conflict had "no impact on (Nabucco's) timing or cost structure."

A survey of potential suppliers for Nabucco suggested the pipeline is over 100 percent overbid.

"More than 50 companies were contacted in the market survey, and about 20 reacted positively," Mitschek said.
