Baird announces emissions offsets

OTTAWA, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Canadian Environment Minister John Baird released the government's offset guides.

The Canadian government previously launched the Turning the Corner Action Plan to reduce greenhouse gases, and the release of the regulations for the country's greenhouse gas offset system is another step in that program, Baird announced.

The new guides will provide details for how to participate in the offset program, which will issue credits for greenhouse gas emission reductions. Industry leaders can use the guides to figure out how to acquire credits and use them to meet their mandatory greenhouse gas reduction targets.

Small businesses and even individuals are also able to participate in the program, but their emissions reductions are voluntary.

Credits will go to developing new energy such as wind, solar, geothermal and hydro.
