N.J. sues reliant over emissions

TRENTON, N.J., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- New Jersey is suing Reliant Energy for pollution from a Pennsylvania power plant that travels across the Delaware River, threatening the health of residents.

The state also said the plant's emissions violate federal law, The Record reported.

New Jersey officials asked a federal court to force the Portland Generating Station to add pollution controls to cut emissions. The plant is near the river in Northampton County, Pa.

"Enough is enough," said Lisa Jackson, New Jersey's environmental protection commissioner. "New Jersey residents are being exposed to a host of pollutants and we simply will not let this go on."

According to the lawsuit, the coal-fired plant, owned by Houston-based Reliant Energy, has spent millions to extend its life without adding required pollution controls and emitted 30,000 tons of sulfur dioxide last year.

The state is also suing the federal government for refusing to declare the plant out of compliance.

"Reliant Energy cares for our environment and communities," Reliant said in a statement. "We are committed to operating our facilities in compliance with all applicable environmental regulations."
