OSCE condemns Goradiz shooting

VIENNA, March 6 (UPI) -- The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is calling on Armenia and Azerbaijan to adhere to a cease-fire after a recent shooting incident.

The OSCE monitoring mission along the Line of Contact between Armenia and Azerbaijan on Feb. 26 reported a shooting incident near Goradiz, Azerbaijan. The incident prompted an investigation from the OSCE, which Thursday strongly condemned the shooting.

Kyle Scott, charge d'affaires of the U.S. mission to the OSCE, released a statement on behalf of the OSCE Minsk Group, which monitors the Armenia and Azerbaijan cease-fire, calling the shooting a violation of a cease-fire agreement.

"We call on the parties to adhere scrupulously to the cease-fire," Scott said in the statement.

"We call for an explanation from the parties for how such an egregious violation of the cease-fire could have taken place."

The OSCE estimates cease-fire violations in 2008 resulted in the deaths of more than 30 people and the injuries of as many as 50.
