WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- The Energy Department said it received a request from a ConocoPhillips subsidiary to export Alaskan gas to countries without U.S. free-trade agreements.
The Federal Register was notified by the Energy Department of the request. The register said subsidiary ConocoPhillips Alaska Natural Gas Corp. asked to ship up to 40 million cubic feet of liquefied natural gas from an Alaskan terminal for a two-year period.
The Energy Department notified the register the request calls for delivery of LNG "to any country with which the United States does not have a free trade agreement requiring national treatment for trade in natural gas and with which trade is not prohibited by U.S. law or policy."
The U.S. government needs to determine if LNG exports to non-FTA countries are in the public interest before consenting to export licenses.
U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz expressed support for LNG exports when he took office in May.
The Federal Register published the information on the request Wednesday. It said the Department of Energy received the request from ConocoPhillips in December.
The Federal Register said the request is subject to a public comment period, which ends Feb. 28.
