Action threatened against Nigerian oil terminal

ABUJA, Nigeria, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- An advocacy group in southern Nigeria threatened to shut down an export terminal if Nigeria Agip Oil Co. failed to control an oil spill reported last week.

Advocacy group Okpoama Vanguard, which operates in Nigeria's southern state of Bayelsa, said it would mobilize at the Brass Oil Export Terminal if Agip, a subsidiary of Italian energy company Eni, didn't react to last week's incident.

"Agip should do [what's needed] and come to the aid of the fishermen while they try to contain the spill, otherwise we will mobilize our people to stop activities at the terminal," a statement published by the Nigerian newspaper ThisDay said Thursday.

The group said the spill threatened to destroy the livelihood of fishermen in the region.

The state-run News Agency of Nigeria confirmed the spill into the Atlantic Ocean last week but provided no details about the volume released. There was no public comment from Agip or its parent company.

Amnesty International published a 66-page report on the legacy of oil spills in the Niger Delta in November. It said Agip was responsible for more than 400 spills in the region last year.

"Agip attributes the vast majority of spills to sabotage but provides absolutely no information to support this allegation," the report said.
