WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline Monday in the United States is the cheapest it's been since February 2011, AAA said.
"Most drivers today are paying the cheapest gas prices in nearly 33 months," AAA spokesman Michael Green told United Press International. "Today's national average price of gas is $3.19 per gallon, which is the cheapest since Feb. 22, 2011."
AAA said about 25 percent of the retail filling stations in the United States are selling gasoline for less than $3 per gallon while 10 percent have prices above $3.50.
Arkansas had the lowest state average Monday with $2.93 per gallon. California had the highest price in the Lower 48 states with a state average of $3.61.
"The national average could fall very close to $3 per gallon by the end of the year due to abundant supplies, declining demand and lower oil costs," Green said.
Refineries in September switch to a winter blend of gasoline, which is cheaper to make than the summer blend because of fewer environmental restrictions.
The last time the national average was below $3 per gallon was Dec. 22, 2010.
