LONDON, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- The British and South Korean governments said they'd work together on nuclear power, lauding it as a low-carbon solution to climate issues.
South Korean President Park Geun-hye led a delegation to London this week. Both governments announced Wednesday they reached a bilateral agreement on how best to tackle climate issues.
"We believe that nuclear power provides a safe, consistent and affordable source of energy, and has a key role to play in the future low carbon energy mix," a joint statement read.
The British government said it would build on a bilateral 1991 agreement on nuclear safety and power generation. A memorandum of understanding signed this week describes nuclear energy as a "safe, consistent and affordable source of energy."
The International Atomic Energy Agency in September said it expected nuclear power capacity to grow by at least 17 percent by 2030. The agency said much of that growth will come from Asia.
British Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said in a statement a low-carbon economy was good for bilateral affairs.
"We ... recognize the huge economic opportunities of moving to a low carbon economy, for new drivers of growth and jobs, and for greater security of energy supply," he said.
