Russian gas company Gazprom says it's ready for winter

MOSCOW, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Russian energy company Gazprom said it has a record-high amount of natural gas available to meet consumer demands during the approaching winter season.

Members of Gazprom's management committee met in Moscow to examine seasonal demands.

"The meeting noted that the Unified Gas Supply System was generally ready for the forthcoming autumn/winter period," the company said in a statement Thursday.

Gazprom said more than a dozen maintenance and repair operations were completed in preparation for the winter season, with more than 930 miles of natural gas pipelines overhauled.

The company said it has 2.4 trillion cubic feet of operating gas reserves, including its underground gas storage facilities in Belarus,.

"The work is practically completed on the replenishment of underground gas storage facilities with gas that was withdrawn during the last autumn/winter period as well as the accumulation of 2.4 trillion cubic feet as the operating gas reserves of Russian underground gas storage facilities, up 95 billion cubic feet versus 2012," the company said. "This will be a record high amount in the history of the Russian gas industry."
