'Giant' gas find for Eni in Mozambique

MILAN, Italy, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Italian energy company Eni announced Wednesday it made a "giant" natural gas discovery at a prospect off the coast of Mozambique.

Eni said it encountered about 656 feet of gas pay in a well drilled to a depth of 17,600 feet offshore Mozambique. The resources are in Area 4 of the company's Mamba North East 2 exploration prospect.

"The new discovery adds at least 10 trillion cubic feet of gas in place to Area 4, confirming at least 62 tcf of gas in place already discovered," the company said.

In May, Eni announced its Coral 1 exploration prospect, in the deep waters off Mozambique, contained 7 trillion-10 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The discovery lies within the Mamba complex.

Eni last year described the prospect as the largest discovery in the company's exploration history.

The company, considering the prospects at Coral 1, estimated there are at least 15 tcf of gas in the exploration area.
