TAP pipeline solicits interest

ZUG, Switzerland, June 18 (UPI) -- Potential parties to the planned Trans Adriatic Pipeline are called on to express their interest in the project, backers announced.

The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline aims to move natural gas from the Shah Deniz field in Azerbaijan to European consumers through Greece, Albania and Italy.

The TAP consortium announced the launch of an "expression of interest" phase whereby interested operators, financial institutions, governments and suppliers are invited to express their interest in the pipeline.

TAP is expected to carry as much as 353 billion cubic feet of natural gas per year.

In February, a consortium controlling Shah Deniz chose TAP as a possible route to European natural gas consumers.

It would make up the southern section of the so-called Southern Corridor, a network of natural gas pipelines planned for southern Europe.

TAP said interested parties would be notified of the consortium's decisions by October.

Shareholders in the TAP consortium are Swiss energy company EGL, Norway's Statoil and German energy company E.ON Ruhrgas.
