Bring renewables to market, London says

OSLO, Norway, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- The quicker Great Britain can transfer renewable energy to the regional market the better, a British energy official said in Norway.

London last week opened the largest offshore wind farm in the world. British Energy Minister Charles Hendry said his country leads the world in terms of offshore wind energy with 1.6 gigawatts of installed capacity.

"The extent to which we can transfer green energy from nation to nation, and continent to continent, is one of the most important issues for us," he told said at an energy forum in Norway.

Hendry noted that London is committed to getting 30 percent of its electricity needs met by renewable energy sources by 2020. He said, historically, his country has underperformed in the renewable energy race but that trend was reversed through the use of wind and marine energy.

"We could so much more and our policies are designed to bring on renewable energy at scale, to harness the technology and bring it to market," he said.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, during an investment conference in London last year, said his country needs at least $300 billion in investments to boost energy security and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
