WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- The U.S. Energy Department announced it was supporting a 22-turbine wind farm in Maine that could generate more than 50 megawatts of power.
The Record Hill wind power project will feature 22 turbines that would feed energy into Maine's utility company Central Maine Power.
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said his department finalized a $102 million loan guarantee to the developer to help build the 50.6-megawatt wind power plant in Oxford County, Maine.
The project, once completed at the end of the year, will generate enough power to meet the energy demands of nearly every household in the county.
"Clean energy is a major driver of American competitiveness and investments like these are essential to secure our position as global leader," Chu said in a statement.
The turbines used on the project are adapted to keep spinning in turbulent wind conditions rather than shutting down completely.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection approved construction of the wind farm in 2009.
