The European community is pushing for a network of pipelines that rely on some of the natural gas available in Azerbaijan.

TAP is up against the Interconnector Turkey-Greece and other projects included in Europe's so-called Southern Corridor.

TAP Managing Director Kjetil Tungland told Belgium newspaper New Europe that his project offered the best option for Greece.

"I'm sure that Greece will be able to become a gas hub and TAP is very willing to support Greece in this objective," he said. "We believe that we offer the best way to do this, with the lowest possible cost and that is our contribution."

Yiannis Maniatis, the deputy minister for energy in Greece, said Athens was considering linking ITGI and TAP but noted ITGI was his country's priority.
